Notes and Solutions for Algebra 1
Algebra 1 Syllabus 2016-2017
Instructor: Ms. Pora Hesse
Availability and Assistance
I will be available after school every Monday and Wednesday from 2.20 -3.20
Algebra provides a way to represent mathematical representations and analyze change. There are three major strands of study: expressions and operations, equations & inequalities, and functions & statistics. Emphasis is placed on understanding and using the language and symbols of mathematics; representing data using tables, graphs, and equations; problem solving, and data analysis using statistics. Critical thinking skills are essential. The calculator will be used to explore functions and solve more complex problems. Students will take the Virginia SOL test for this course for verified credit.
Materials Required for Class:
GRAPHING CALCULATOR: A graphing calculator will be used for the entire course. I will use a TI-84 Plus. An additional goal of this course is to introduce students to operating a graphing calculator and providing an understanding of its wide range of useful functionality. We will be using the TI 84 Plus for all in-class demonstrations. If it’s possible, it is highly recommended for you to own a personal TI 84 Plus or you can download a free application as I mentioned earlier. This will be more convenient for you when you are working on assigned classwork/homework. The school issued TI 84 Plus calculators will only be available for classroom use. These calculators are not able to be borrowed or taken outside of the classroom. Please note, you are responsible for learning how to operate your calculator outside of the in class demonstrations of functionality.
85% Tests and Quizzes
15% Skill Building (homework and classwork)
ATTENDANCE: You are expected to attend each class meeting. Excessive absences will very likely affect your grade. If you miss a class, you are responsible for acquiring discussion notes from a classmate.
Make-Up and Late Work Policy
If you miss a quiz or a test due to an excused absence, you may make up the assignment(s). To do this, find out what quiz or test you missed, prepare for it, and arrange a time with me to take it before school. You have three days to contact me and complete the missed assignment(s). After three days the grade becomes a zero.
